ERA Turks and Caicos December Real Estate Blog
Here in the Turks and Caicos Islands the Christmas season or holiday season as you wish, has arrived! The Grace Bay Beach area is sparkling with Christmas lights and decorations and a joyous mood prevails. Everyone is happy that the tourist season is off to a good start for another winter. It is a lovely time of year with long warm evenings set off by spectacular ‘Skies on Fire’ sunsets! The best show on the Island and it is free!
Blue skies and sparkling waters may not be your idea of Christmas but come and join us to experience it first hand. Then you can decide for yourself if it is not a better idea! No icy roads, no crowded department stores, no boots and overcoats! Maybe the worst thing is a little sand in your bathing suit - but we like that!
Those lucky enough to live here full time can be cruel telling our northern friends about our vegetable gardens and I admit we can be a little smug when our tomatoes are freshly picked and the melons are ripening in the tropical sun. Gardening is a great hobby anywhere and here it is particularly challenging and rewarding. My beans and lettuce sprout in two days. Tomatoes, melons, herbs all get off to a great start. Many plants do well in pots so a condo deck is a great place for some fresh basil or rosemary for example. Just keep an eye out for wilting and be ready to water once or twice a day. Unfortunately bugs like Providenciales too so watch for the little critters and have the appropriate spray ready. Sunshine Nurseries is always ready to help out here. If you have a yard then you can do up a great garden area with topsoil and lots of organic composting available locally. Lime trees, orange and lemon and even a type of cherry can do well here so experiment and enjoy the wide variety of planting available in this climate.
Landscape gardening is very easy. Plants will grow into spaces within a couple of years and be very strong. Avoid planting large specimens that take a longer time to get established and are weak during the initial few months. We all now need to use small ‘home-size’ waste treatment plants which provide our irrigation water. Certain plants seem to be very vigorous and two plants of the same species will grow at vastly different rates. So mix things up – get advice on flowering times and you can have a beautiful garden year round. Nothing is nicer than breakfast in your garden under a canopy of tropical trees with butterflies and birds and then maybe a swim in your pool! Ahh the sweet life! We at ERA can help put you right here where you and your family belong.
